Whoever wins the presidency in November may not feel like much of a winner at all once the ship of state is handed over to him Jan. 20. To say that ship is sailing on some mighty rough waters is an obvious understatement; clearly he will have his work cut out for him.

Frank Rich in today’s New York Times offers his perspective on the prospective Republican nominee’s economic aptitude. And it’s not one to take to the bank, so to speak.

It may, however, help to shed some light on how Sen. McCain graduated near the very bottom of his class at the U.S. Naval Academy, and how he somehow has managed to spend a quarter of a century in Congress, first as a representative and then as a senator, without — by his own admission — ever mastering the basics how the economy works.
