Wasilla, Alaska City Hall — America’s runway to bigger things,
or ground zero for one of the nation’s worst toxic-waste dumps?

Let’s hope the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency looks soon into the drinking water quality of Wasilla, Alaska, because apparently there’s something in it that causes residents to become suddenly dumb-founded when asked the most basic of questions.

First there was Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, a near lifelong Wasilla resident who cites her former role as the village’s mayor for the bulk of her executive and leadership experience, left practically speechless when asked to name a single newspaper or magazine she routinely reads to stay informed of national and world affairs. Given three opportunities by CBS News anchor Katie Couric, Palin proved unable to think of even one. She sputtered similar nonsense without ever answering when asked to name just one former Supreme Court decision with which she disagrees, other than Roe vs. Wade.

But now a clear pattern is emerging, following an interview by The Daily Show (see video below) with the current mayor of Wasilla, Dianne Keller — leaving us to ponder whether the good folks up there may be unwitting victims of groundwater mercury poisoning or some other toxin.

Despite Palin’s assertion during her heralded Republican National Convention speech that the mayoral job carries “actual responsibilities”, her successor seems wholly unaware of them.  Oh yes, Ms. Keller finally recalls — she does conduct staff meetings occasionally and issue payroll checks.

Mighty fine credentials, there, yes ma’am. Next career stop: secretary-general of the United Nations.

Just in case there is any remaining doubt, The Daily Show also was able to confirm that Wasilla is the indisputable capital of “Real America”, whose citizens are all “pro-American”:
